6th Grade December 2025 Newsletter
What Are Our Scholars Learning This Month?
ELA: During December, we will continue reading “Bud, Not Buddy.” Students will begin analyzing how an author’s word choice affects a literary text's tone and meaning. Students will learn to determine the author's point of view in a text. They will continue exploring text-dependent questions and practice citing text-based evidence. These skills will be used to support the analysis of literary texts when producing clear, coherent argument essays. In addition, the students are continuing to increase their vocabulary with our weekly vocabulary packets. Please continue to encourage your child to complete all assignments and to read daily for 30 minutes!!!! Students should also utilize i-Ready and IXL nightly.
Math: We will start exploring expressions and equations in real-world applications. We will begin to use variables to represent unknown numbers. This will include using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to explore the properties of equality to write and solve equivalent equations (i.e., 3 + c 11 or 7n = 45). We will also use multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction to solve equations with rational numbers and fractions (e.g., 3¾ + x = 6). Please continue to check Google Classroom to ensure your scholar completes all assignments.
Science: Motion, forces, work, and machines will be the focus as we end our Second Unit on Engineering and Energy Transformations. Students will use the Engineering Design Process to invent or innovate a toy. Students will present their ideas to the class as a culminating project. Watch out, Hasbro!!!!
Social Studies: We are currently studying Ancient Mesopotamia and the culture of the First Civilization, including the Laws of Hammurabi and everyday life in the region. We even learned how to write in Ancient Cuneiform!
Art: Students in sixth grade have just started learning about Pop Art. This is a style of art in which artists include popular objects, people, or places in their artwork. Students will be choosing a popular item to create their own artwork around. They will then learn about printmaking and make several prints.
Computer Science: Students are currently working on an “About Me” project where they are programming and designing their own digital stories using the MIT Scratch environment. Their final project will be made of three different programs in one. Students apply computational thinking and programming skills to create a meaningful and relevant digital artifact. These activities are designed to help students explore the computational concepts of loops, events, and parallelism. Students will become more fluent in block-based coding and image manipulation.
Physical Education: During December, we will be finishing up our Goalline Soccer World Cup. Then we will be moving on to flag football. Our flag football unit will feature equipment received from the NFL through a grant written by the Lead-X Physical Education staff. Please remember that students must be prepared to participate in Physical Education class (SNEAKERS/SHORTS OR SWEATPANTS, NO JEANS, CROCS, OR BOOTS). Thank you for your continued support.
ENL: This month, the students will be working on Unit 2, Getting to Know You. Throughout this unit, students will learn new vocabulary, possessive adjectives, and adjectives, and read realistic fiction and informational texts, as well as learn about contractions, everyday habits, and adverbs. Students will also be building their English Language Development through the topic of exercise and its benefits for brain development. We will listen to, read, discuss, and write our opinions about recess.
